Snoring? Sort it out

Snoring can ruin a good night's sleep for both you and your partner. FS magazine tells you how to sort it out...

Why do we snore?

Snoring is caused by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissues in the upper airways. Sounds range from 50dB to 100dB, which is as loud as a pneumatic drill.

Am I alone in this?

No, it’s very common. There are 15million snorers in the UK; over two-thirds of these are men. Being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol are three of the main reasons for snoring. Unfortunately one-third of couples report that snoring causes issues within their relationship. So get it sorted now, for you and your loved one.

What can I do then?

There are lots of gadgets on the market that might help. Try using a Tongue Stabilising Device (TSD), which is a bit like a grown-up dummy. It holds your tongue forward to create suction and this allows air to pass through your soft tissues as you breathe through your nose. It could be the best £50 you’ve spent.

Are there any cheaper remedies?

It’s said ginger tea can also help snorers. Mix 1 tsp of ginger and 1 tsp of honey with boiling water and drink before bed. Or try using an extra pillow. Make sure to visit a GP if the problem persists.
